From Linden Lab Reveals the Future of Second Life
Blog post about discussing Second Life’s possible move towards open source and user hosted content. According to the author, Linden Labs is deliberating creating an open source server and allowing other domains to plug into it.

Well, not exactly
In the end there might also be an open source server but right now it’s more about an open protocol to interconnect virtual worlds based on that proposed architecture. Linden Lab said that they are committed to open source the server but this will probably happen after the open protocol is defined and their grid is migrated to it. Right now only the SL client is open source.
The protocol would then also allow servers hosted by third parties. What they are now looking for are people who want to participate, not only in trying to implement some of the components to see if these really are interoperable but also to give input for such a protocol.
